With his blessing gone, Saul is stuck on the side of a river with his army, being taunted daily by a philistine giant called Goliath.

The blessed one, David, is told by has father to take supplies to his brothers at the front line. He is appalled to see the army of the true God trembling in fear, and offers to take on Goliath himself.

The rest of course is history – David tells the Philistine: “You come to me with a sword, with a spear and with a javeline. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, who you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand and I will take your head from you.”

Goliath swore at him in the name of his own god, and battle commences. David despatches Goliath in seconds with a sling and a rock “so that the assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with sword and spear. The battle is the Lord’s”

After that the dancing girls who welcome the troops home sing more fulsomely about David than Saul, and Saul naturally becomes jealous and plots to kill David.

A lovely quote from Psalm 17: “As for me, I will see Your face in righteousness; I shall be satisfied when I awake in your likeness.”

Dear God, Please help me strive to be like you: loving and kind. Thank you for all the gifts you give me -my children and my husband. Please help me strive more to be like you. In Jesus’ name, Amen
