It all starts to go pear-shaped for Saul in this chapter.
Samuel tells Saul that God will give him victory over the Amelekites, but warns that he is to destroy everything, including all the livestock. Saul beats the Amelekites but then keeps the livestock, to sacrifice to God.
But God is angry – “Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord?” God withdraws his blessing for Saul as ruler.
Samuel is told to take his anointing oil to the tribe of Jesse, and is told to anoint David, a talented harpist.
Then David is summonsed to the court of Saul, as his harp playing soothes the troubles of the accursed king.
Dear God, Thank you for another lovely day. Thank you that you are guiding me through the sense of loss I feel that my father has gone home. Please continue to guide me through those feelings, which cut right back to my child’s heart, and come out with a renewed sense of peace and joy. Please forgive me my sins, and heal J’s leg. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
