David gets old and cannot get out of bed, so naturally treason is just around the corner. His son Adonijah sets himself up as king, and even goes into his father’s concubines in front of all the people.

Bathsheba, the cause of David’s sin, goes to King David on behalf of their son Solomon, and David rises from bed long enough to anoint Solomon, as well as leave him instructions on tidying up all his affairs after he has gone.

Solomon obeys his father’s wishes, and the first few months of his reign are a bloodbath as he kills the enemies David himself could not kill due to promises he made. Adonijah is also killed for outraging his father’s concubines.

Psalm 34 is all about the protection of the Lord. I liked these lines: “Many are the afflictions of the righteous but the Lord delivers him out of them all. He guards all his bones. Not one of them is broken.”

Dear God, Thank you for the precious people in my life. Thank you for the lovely holidays we had together. Thank you that we just got to hang out together yesterday on your Sabbath. Please help us to build a little sanctuary of yours in our home. Help us to dedicate our lives to your will and to spreading your love. In Jesus’ name, Amen
