This is the story of the friendship between David and Jonathan – Saul’s son.

Saul is bent on killing David, as he realises that David is now the anointed one, and his own kingship is rotting and fruitless. Jonathan, on the other hand, loves David more than he loves himself. So whenever one of Saul’s moods overtakes him, Jonathan saves David, often by complicated means.

Saul becomes infuriated: “You have chosen the son of Jesse to your own shame… As long as the son of Jesse lives on the earth, you shall not be established, nor your kingdom…Now therefore, send and bring him to me, for he shall surely die.”

Jonathan refuses – bravely choosing to love David more than his own potential kingship. David promises to never harm him, or his house, when he becomes king.

Dear God, I feel somewhat oppressed myself right now. My feelings of loss overwhelm me. Please forgive me my sins, for turning to earthly things for solace instead of you, and please replace my feelings of loss and sorrow with your joy and peace. Thank you for all the amazing blessings you give me. Please also help me be more patient. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
