When we left Hezekiah yesterday, Jerusalem was the last holdout against the King of Assyria, who has enslaved everyone in the surrounding district, and who was calling out “who is your Lord to save you?” when we left our story yesterday….<\/p>\n
Of course nobody makes a threat like that against the Lord of Israel, not in the bible, without action being swiftly taken.<\/p>\n
Hezekiah calls in the new prophet – the soon-to-be-mighty Isaiah – and asks what will happen.<\/p>\n
“And Isaiah said to them, “Thus you shall say to your master, ‘Thus says the Lord: “Do not be aftraid of the words which you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me. Surely I will send a spirit upon him, and he shall hear a rumor and return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.”<\/p>\n
He then gives Hezekiah words for the servants of the King of Assyria, mighty and poetic words. These are delivered and it is indeed as the Lord says: the King of Assyria leaves Jerusalem empty handed and goes to fight and die in a war at home.<\/p>\n
Hezekiah takes ill sometime after this and prays to the Lord to let him live. Isaiah tells him that the Lord will let him live, but prophecies that Jerusalem will fall to Babylon very soon.<\/p>\n
In time Hezekiah dies and his son, Mannaseh, ascends the throne. He becomes one of the worst kings yet.<\/p>\n
Psalm 49 warns us against putting our faith in our wealth, or of being jealous of other people’s wealth.<\/p>\n
Dear God, Thank you for the timely warning of Psalm 49. I have been worrying about our future and now you have reminded me that the only thing I need worry about is maintaining my faith in you, this day. You will take care of everything else.
