These are quarrelsome chapters. The Lord sends fire on the Israelites for their whingeing and they repent for an hour, then they’re off again, this time moaning for meat. So the Lord vows to send them so much meat “it’s coming out of their ears”. Some eat so much of it they get sick and die.<\/p>\n
Next up with the moaning is Moses, who complains that as the prophet, he is the only one who shouts and gets moaned at, so God tells him to bring 70 men, and turns them also into prophets for a “short time”. Everyone looks at them and thinks they’ve gone mad, so I guess that made Moses feel better.<\/p>\n
Then Miriam, Moses’ sister, criticises Moses’ wife. Miriam is punished with a dreaded disease, which she suffers for a week before God listens to Aaron’s pleas for her. Then she is restored.<\/p>\n
Wow- what a lot of disharmony is packed into these chapters – and that doesn’t even count the final chapter to do with the spies who are sent into the Promised Land and come back telling lies about the giants there. Only Joshua and Caleb stand against the lies, but no-one listens to them.<\/p>\n
